Zika virus: Causes, Symptoms, and Precautions

Covid didn’t even started declining in the state of Kerala, a new type of virus started emerging there, Zika virus.

The state reported its first case of Zika virus infection on Thursday, the new type of virus have epidemic powers and have created a state of panic in the region.

What is Zika virus ?

Zika is a type of virus like dengue and malaria and also spreads through the mosquito bites.

Transmitted by female Aedes mosquitoes, which bite during the day. The same Aedes mosquito is responsible for spreading dengue, malaria as well.

The vaccine for Zika virus is still under research and development. Till now, the best way to prevent infection is to avoid mosquito bites and reduce going to mosquitoes area.

Causes of Zika virus

Zika virus is most often spread to a person through the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carries the virus are aedes species mosquitoes, which can be found throughout the world.

Zika virus can also pass from sex from a person who has Zika to his or her sex partners. Condoms are effective it reduces the chance of getting Zika from sex. Condoms include male and female condoms.

Symptoms

Many people infected with Zika virus won’t have any symptoms or will only have mild symptoms.

The most common symptoms of Zika are:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Muscle pain
  • Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
  • Joint pain
  • Malaise
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Eye pain

Precautions

The best way to prevent Zika is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Mosquitoes that spread Zika and other viruses bite during the day and night. Always try to avoid contaminated water areas, have proper mosquitoes repellent devices at home, always use mosquitoes repellent cream.

Zika can be passed through sex from a person who has Zika to his or her sex partners. So always try to have protected sex, use condoms etc.

Treatments

There is no specific treatment for the Zika virus infection. The vaccine is under development, only the symptoms of the virus can be treated. Doctor may prescribe medicines for fever, joint pain, conjunctivitis etc., a lot of rest is need with plenty of water to overcome dehydration in order to relive symptoms. The mortality rate of the virus is around 1%.
